You must also obtain a new registration certificate when you change vehicles.

What to do if you lose your vehicle registration certificate?

In this situation, the first step is to file a loss report with the prefecture or sub-prefecture. Following this declaration, you will be issued a two-part receipt. The first part will serve as a temporary driving permit for one month. The second part will allow you to compile your replacement application.

From the date the loss is reported, you have one month to replace your vehicle registration certificate. The required documents include copies 2 and 3 of the loss declaration, a photocopy of a valid ID, and a completed application form for a duplicate registration certificate, along with proof of address and payment by check or cash. Finally, for vehicles older than four years, you must also provide proof of a valid technical inspection.

What to do in case of wear or theft?

If your vehicle registration certificate is worn or damaged, you may request a duplicate. The application must include the deteriorated registration certificate to be exchanged, a photocopy of a valid ID, a completed application form for a registration certificate, proof of residence, proof of payment of the required fees, as well as a valid technical inspection certificate for vehicles older than 4 years.

In the event of theft, you must file a police report immediately. Unlike reporting a lost item, a theft report must be filed at a police station or gendarmerie. Once the report is filed, you will be issued a two-part receipt, which will allow you to continue driving for one month while you prepare your application for a duplicate.

Otherwise, the process is exactly the same as in the event of a loss. Naturally, when you switch vehicles, you must complete the entire procedure again, just as you did with your previous car. A registration certificate is specific to each individual vehicle. Recently, prefectures have stopped issuing physical registration certificates, as the entire process is now handled online.

Every motor vehicle requires a registration certificate to be driven legally on public roads.
